When you turn this cat and view it from certain angles, the details line up just right. You encounter a moment of animation. The eye hole on the opposing side becomes a suddenly focussed eye on this. Part of the magic of this piece.
The interior light reveals the fine hidden fur pattern. The lines are basically invisible except on the closest of examination when the lamp is dark. There is another level of skill and understanding represented here. Much extra effort was put into the most subtle of details. Works in the same way secret pattern plates would reveal the incised dragon only when held to the light. Again speaking to the quality exhibited in this piece.
This piece has a great presence. The translucency of the porcelain hides nothing. There is no denying the skill of the hands that pressed this copy. The evidence of the skill is literally illuminated when the lamp is lit.
The much larger wax head I am working on in Instructor owes a lot to this piece. Mine is just the head, much larger and for the wall but a light to be made of translucent porcelain all the same. I want to achieve a similar degree of translucency. If all goes well, I will be featuring some of my own in an After Dark segment (which I suppose will make it a cross category segment).
