Another week of slip casting, cleaning greenware and bisque firing. Not a lot of work space left. Wrapped up slip casting yesterday. Putting the handles on the last few cups today and then that’s it. Time for glazing and firing.

I did take a few process picks but have decided not to post them. I have something much more interesting for you to look at this week.

I was doing a little reorganizing inside the house. I came across a box of very special mugs that I had not photographed previously. I have been holding these mugs back for years. In my eyes they are too beautiful to part with. It would be very difficult for me to duplicate this effect. I no longer have access to the right kind of kilns.

The mugs were fired first in a soda kiln. The black came out very dry to the touch. I fired them again in the electric kiln and these are the results. The tumbler was fired in a wood kiln more than a decade ago. As you can see, the effect is much the same. No re-fire was needed to achieve this effect in the wood kiln.

Bullseye and spiral crystals are extremely rare glaze effects. Other than the few pieces I have produced, I have not seen any others. If you have, please let me know as I would be interested in seeing them.
