Valentine’s Day seems the perfect time to present this miniature which I am calling “The Lovebirds”. From the same lot of five as the Porthos, Pierrot and Voltigeur miniatures posted last year. Every bit their equal in quality. Probably Russian but possibly Continental. Early nineteenth century.
An elegantly dressed gentleman presents his beloved with a handful of flowers. Her left arm is raised in a gesture of surprise while he moves in for a kiss. The two doves at their feet are the symbol of their romantic love.
This miniature, like the others from that lot, is finely modelled according to classic sculptural proportions. Enamelled and gilded with an exceptional level of detail.
The woman’s left hand and the basket handle need to be replaced if I ever find the time. Other than that, the condition is excellent.
5.8 cm in height.
