• Russian_Imperial_Glass_Chapel_Egg_4

Copper Blue Chapel Egg. Russian Imperial Glassworks. Period of Nicholas II. 1894 to 1917.

Blown glass with grinding, cutting and polishing.

This egg may depict the Imperial Chapel at Peterhof like the Steel Blue Chapel Egg seen previously, but with a greater degree of artistic licence. Alternatively, it depicts an as yet unidentified Russian Orthodox church.

The slightly concave lens on the back of the egg transforms the circular medallion on the front into an egg shape. If this is indeed a depiction of the Imperial Chapel at Peterhof, having it contained within an egg shaped medallion might symbolize being born into the Russian Orthodox Church through the act of baptism.

8.6 cm in height.
